Jane Eyre is a first-person narrative of the title character, a small,plain-faced, intelligent and honest English orphan. The novel goes through fivedistinct stages: Jane's childhood at Gateshead, where she is abused by her auntand cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and rolemodels but also suffers privations; her time as the governess of ThornfieldManor, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; hertime with the Rivers family at Marsh's End (or Moor House) and Morton, where hercold clergyman-cousin St John Rivers proposes to her; and her reunion with andmarriage to her beloved Rochester at his house of Ferndean. Partlyautobiographical, the novel abounds with social criticism and sinister gothicelements.

我一向对名著不太感兴趣，往往是看了半截便将其冷落在旁。《城南旧事》不同，淡淡的文字，悠悠的叙述将我领进二十世纪二十年代的老北京，在娓娓动人的真挚叙述中抒发了对童年的缅怀和对人间温暖的呼唤，不但写得亲切动人，而且每个故事都能令我思绪起伏，多种交集的感觉同时在心头涌现。
《城南旧事》中满含着怀旧的基调，将其自身包含的多层次的情绪色彩，以一种自然的、不着痕迹的手段精细地表现出来。书中的一切都是那样有条不紊，缓缓的流水、缓缓的驼队、缓缓而过的人群、缓缓而逝的岁月……景、物、人、事、情完美结合，恰似一首淡雅而含蓄的诗。
这部作品由五个篇章组成：惠安馆，我们看海去，兰姨娘，驴打滚儿及爸爸的花儿落了，全文由英子引起，以她孩子般纯洁的眼睛来看在北平生活的点滴，记载着英子七岁到十三岁的成长经历，旁观着成人世界的悲欢离合，凭着她微妙的记忆，将年幼时围绕她发生的生活旧事记录下来……
英子的世界是单纯的，充满疑问的，她从不在自己的世界里上锁，总是任由人们进进出出。所以她和被人们认为是疯子的秀贞结下了友情，三天两头的往惠安馆里钻；她和“小偷”写下承诺，甚而认真地听着“小偷”的故事；她爱着自己的奶妈，望着她离去，英子伤心难过。透过英子童稚的双眼，我们看到了大人世界的悲欢离合，虽然很天真，却道尽人世复杂的情感。
本书的每一篇到结尾，主角似乎总是离开英子，像惠安馆的疯子秀贞、我们看海去那个小偷、奶妈、最后连她的爸爸也离她而去了，当时她才小学毕业呢！看着无人修剪的花任意雕落，也为本书画上句点……
虽然《城南旧事》看后叫人心酸落泪，可是它的每一个感人肺腑的.故事，都洋溢着温馨的亲情和友爱。虽然每个故事的结尾，里面的主角都是离作者而去，可是作者透过正面的描写和反面的烘托，把每个人物的样子写得淋漓尽致，性格表露无遗，即使闭上眼睛，他们的影子还盈盈浮现眼前：井边的小伙伴，椿树胡同的疯女人，藏在草堆里的偷儿，斜着嘴笑的兰姨娘，不理小孩子的德先叔，骑着小驴回老家的宋妈，加上聪明伶俐的英子，组成了作者的写作世界，在这世界里，带着人间温暖的风吹遍了每个角落，吹醒了读者和平的心灵，这是一本散发着芬芳的书，更是一本开卷有益的书，它能使人从中领略到很多人生道理。
看《城南旧事》，心头漾起一丝丝的温暖，因为已经很少看见这样精致的东西，因为她不刻意表达什幺，只一幅场景一幅场景地从容描绘一个孩子眼中的老北京，就像生活在介绍它自己。那样的不紧不慢，温厚淳和，那样的安静祥和，弥久恒馨，那样的满是人间烟火味，却无半点追名逐利之心。
