权衡利弊英文
前两天读到这样一个段子：
Mother: I sent my little boy for two pounds of plums and you gave him a pound and a half.
Shopkeeper: My scales are all right, madam. Have you weighed your little boy?
(母亲：我让我的小儿子来买两磅李子，可你只给了他一磅半。
店主：我的称是没问题的。您称过你的小儿子了吗?)
今天的纽约时报又这样一个题目：
Two Tracks on Iran: Keep Talking, and Weigh Penalties
我就来讲讲weigh这个词吧。
上面这个幽默段子中的'weigh意思就是“用称进行称量”。有时候没有称，你也可以用手掂量物体的重量。看下面的例子：
She weighed the diamond ring in her hand. (她用手掂了掂这个钻戒的重量)。
你还可以掂量(权衡、斟酌)一些没有重量的东西。譬如：
He sometimes paused to weigh his words. 他有时停下来斟酌一下他的用词。
After having weighed the pros and cons, he decided not to go. 在权衡利弊之后，他决定不去。
I have to weigh dollar costs against non-monetary outcomes. 我必须把资金方面的成本与其它的非金钱方面的后果进行权衡比较。
上面纽约时报的标题的意思是：对于伊朗问题有两条路可走：继续谈判与考虑进行何种制裁。这里weigh就是权衡哪一种制裁比较有利。
很多情况下我们都是用天平进行称量，一般都会出现某一边重一些的情况。如果我们把利弊也拿到天平的两边进行称量，有一种结果可能就是：
The advantages far outweigh disadvantages. 利远大于弊。
其它的例子还有：
Ignoring ecological concerns can have a real, tangible cost---one that may outweigh any extra benefit from untrammeled development. 忽视环境问题会产生实实在在的代价---这种代价可能超过无限制发展所带来的额外利益。(更多带out-前缀的词的用法请见6月1日的博客)
新概念英语第四册中就有这样一个句子：
Two factors weigh heavily against the effectiveneof scientific research in industry. 有两个因素严重地妨碍着工业中科学研究的效率。
这里weigh against意思是“不利于”。有利于就可以说weigh in favor of:
His work experiences in other countries weigh heavily in his favor in the application for the position. 在申请这个职位的过程中，他在国外工作的经历对他非常有利。
Narrowly academic examinations are heavily weighed in favor of children who have studied in highly-academic primary schools. 狭隘地只强调知识掌握的考试往往对那些在非常强调学习的学校中学习过的学生有利。
其实weigh最基本的意思就是“重多少”，比如：
The carton alone weighs two pounds. 光箱子就重两磅。
也可以有比喻的用法：
The problem weighs heavily on his mind. 这个问题让他担心着急(在他的思想上占的分量很重)。
