Cover Letter Tips
When it comes to cover letter writing services, you owe it to yourself and your future to consider ResumeEdge for cover letters.
A cover letter is a clear and concisely written, perfectly formatted, single-spaced, spell-checked, one-dimensional version of your best self. Cover letters tell an employer who you are by reflecting your tone, your writing proficiency, your ability to use correct grammar and punctuation, and your ability to spell. A cover letter that contains misspelled words or grammatical inconsistencies indicates that you do not pay attention to detail or review your work product. Also, the way you organize your information will give an employer insight as to how you organize your thoughts. A careless cover letter reflects a careless you. And who wants to hire someone like that?
How do you write cover letters that will persuade a hiring manager to select your resume? A cover letter should be personalized to each company or organization where you are sending it. Never address cover letters to “Dear Sir” or “To whom it may concern.” Always include the name of the person in charge of hiring or who is conducting the job search. If you do not know the name of the person to address it to, call or email the company to find out.
Use the opening paragraph to introduce yourself, state the position that you are applying for and include two qualifications that make you a perfect candidate for the job. In the body of the cover letter, relate how your previous job experience supports the qualifications that you stated in the introduction. Provide examples on how these skills helped you accomplish your goals. Explain how your accomplishments can benefit the company you are seeking employment with. Refer to your resume, but never repeat it.
Use care when choosing your words because they may imply different things to different industries. For example, if you write, “work well independently,” a hiring manager at a corporation or law firm might make the assumption that you are not a team player. However, if you are applying for a research position, being able to work independently is an asset. Similarly, if you write that you are a “creative thinker” and you are applying for a job in a corporation, bank or law firm, it may imply that you are unable to focus and work in a structured environment. However, if you are applying for a job in advertising, teaching, fashion or graphic design, being a “creative thinker” is advantageous. When in doubt, the best rule of thumb for cover letters is this: do not use words to describe yourself, but to describe your accomplishments.
Do not use passive descriptive words such as, “responsibilities included” or “assisted with”. Use action words that will tell a potential employer how you accomplished your goals. For example, when you use words such as “negotiated settlement” or “reduced costs,” follow-up these statements with quantifiable results and explain how these achievements merited your performance within the company.
More and more employers are conducting job searches through on-line job databases, such as Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com, that require applicants to upload their cover letters and resumes onto the internet. How can an employer distinguish your cover letter from all the thousands that are floating out there in the intergalactic universe of the World Wide Web? Keywords. It is important to focus on keywords that will allow your resume and cover letter to be more searchable. Think about the industry within which you are applying for a job and try to use as many industry-specific words in your cover letter and resume as you can. When employers key-in words for their on-line resume search, you want to position your cover letter and resume so that they will be among those retrieved.
Close cover letters with a strong emphasis on why you are a good match for that company or organization. Request that you be invited in for an interview and provide current contact information so that you can be reached. Thank the hiring manager for taking the time to read your cover letter and resume and remember to sign your name. Most importantly, proofread, proofread, proofread! And then have someone else proofread it before you send it out.
If this all seems too daunting a task, consider cover letter writing services such as ResumeEdge. You’ll be amazed at what we can do with grammar, vocabulary, and the bare bones of your cover letters!
