Good morning everyone!

My name is Jie Lidi. Today, my topic is: “Confidence”.

As we all know, failure is the mother of success. But What I want to say is that success is thechild of confidence. Without confidence, things can become negative anduncomfortable. I remember, during an English class, I wanted to make a sentenceusing the word "listen". I should have said: "I listen to the Voice of America"but I was too nervous and said "I listen to the Noise of America". Everybody inthe class laughed. Since then I wanted to train myself to be confident. Now,confidence makes me brave and courageous. Take this speech for example. I wantedto enter this competition, but I would feel very embarrassed if I made mistakes.Just then, I thought about my dream. My dream is to become a scientist when Igrow up. If I am not confident, how can I overcome difficulties I face? If I amnot confident, how can I succeed in developing myself in the future? I will doit! Today, I am making a speech in public and I feel proud and confident!

I am sure, in the future, with confidence, I will go forward-alwaysforward. Confidence will make my dreams come true!

  Thank you!

Hello, everybody! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, everybody. All right, everybody go ahead and have a seat. How is everybody doing today? (Applause.) How about Tim Spicer? (Applause.) I am here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, from kindergarten through 12th grade. And I am just so glad that all could join us today. And I want to thank Wakefield for being such an outstanding host. Give yourselves a big round of applause. (Applause.)I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived overseas. I lived in Indonesia for a few years. And my mother, she didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning. Now, as you might imagine, I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early. And a lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she’d say, “This is no picnic for me either, buster.” (Laughter.)So I know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year. But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. That’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.

As everyone knows,English is very important today. It has been used everywhere in the world. It has become the most common language on Internet and for international trade. If we can speak English well,we will have more chance to succeed.Because more and more people have taken notice of it,the number of the people who go to learn English has increased at a high speed.

But for myself,I learn English not only because of its importance and its usefulness, but also because of my love for it.When I learn English, I can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world. When I read English novels,I can feel the pleasure from the book which is different from reading the translation. When I speak English, I can feel the confident from my words. When I write English,I can see the beauty which is not the same as our Chinese...

I love English,it gives me a colorful dream.I hope I can travel around the world one day. With my good English, I can make friends with many people from different contries.I can see many places of great intrests.I dream that I can go to London, because it is the birth place of English.

I also want to use my good English to introduce our great places to the English spoken people,I hope that they can love our country like us.

I know, Rome was not built in a day. I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well.

If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. So I believe as I love English everyday , it will love me too.

I am sure that I will realize my dream one day!

  Thank you!

secretary kerry: well, nisha, thank you very, very much. welcome, everybody, to acelebration, and happy diwali to all of you. it’s nice to be here.

  audience: happy diwali. (applause.)

secretary kerry: thank you very much. we are really pleased to be celebrating this tonight, and i’m particularly grateful for nisha, both for her generous welcome to all of you and to me,but more especially because she’s making really critical efforts in a key part of the world, obviously, as assistant secretary of state for south and central asia. and i was delighted toselect her for that job, and she has not let me down. she is persistent, tenacious – where areher parents? where are the parents? (laughter.) raise your hands. where are the – where areyour parents?

assistant secretary biswal: right here. right over here.

secretary kerry: hooray for you. well done. (applause.) thank you. well, i want you to knowshe’s doing a terrific job. (laughter.) i didn’t just single you out to tell her how bad she is. imean – (laughter) – but she’s doing fabulous. and she left india when she was only six yearsold, and today, literally in just a few decades, she’s become one of the important leaders inamerican foreign policy. and her odyssey, if we call it that, really speaks to the power of theamerican dream. it shows how aspirations and traditions and histories from all over the worldcome together still in this melting pot, and they revitalize and they renew our nation.

and that’s really what makes america different from every other place. we are not defined byone race or one ideology or one history. we are defined by the idea of all people being createdequal and being able to come and exercise their right to pursue a dream here in the unitedstates, but to become very american in doing so. and nisha has obviously described the wayshe does that.

i also want to thank priest narayanachar, who in a few moments is going to lead an invocationand light the diya, the traditional diwali lamp. and priest narayanachar helps to lead one ofthe largest hindu temples in the united states at sri siva vishnu, and it’s difficult to believethat this is a community that began with only a few recent indian immigrants who celebratedoccasions like this one in their own homes. and less than four decades later, the temple not onlyserves as a spiritual home for thousands of hindu americans, but it provides support andoutreach for people of all backgrounds and beliefs.

so as we celebrate diwali this evening, we also hail the accomplishments of the manyhundreds of thousands of hindu, sikh, buddhist, and jain americans who live now all across ourcountry in every community. and we honor their faith and their traditions, and theindispensable contributions that they make every single day to our prosperity, to ourfreedom, and to our culture – to this new chapter of american history that they are helping towrite. and today, the south asian diaspora is a pillar of every aspect of american society.south asians sit in the executive suites of some of our country’s most successful companies, orat the very helm of all of them. they launch startups and earn graduate degrees at severaltimes the national average. they are a driving force behind american leadership and scienceand innovation, and in the history of our nation – and we are a nation of immigrants – it ishard to find any group of americans who have achieved more in such a relatively short period oftime. (applause.)

now, as everybody here knows better than anybody in the world, india is, of course, a countryof enormous energy and power. it is by far the largest nation in south asia, and last monthduring prime minister modi’s visit to the united states, we had an unforgettable chance both tobuild on the already deep ties between america and india, and many of you were here whenvice president biden and i welcomed the prime minister right here to this very stage. theprime minister’s visit was a moment when indians and americans could get a real sense ofwhat our two nations are able to accomplish together by working together, by fighting againstterrorism, by creating opportunity for our young people, by combating climate change, toachieving greater progress by pushing back the boundaries of science and technology. and weare determined to build on that moment that was so well defined here in the primeminister’s words and in the vice president’s words, so that the world’s oldest and largestdemocracies can realize the truly extraordinary, boundless potential of our relationship.

india and the united states – and i discovered this really back when i was in the senate. ithink as a senator i took the first senate business mission, if you will, with a whole bunch ofbusinesses to india very shortly after then finance minister singh had announced theeconomic reforms. and that was a time when it was still breaking through the prior years ofsome suspicion and a certain hangover from the cold war.

and we worked hard to prove that we were, in fact, natural partners, which i believe we are. weare two optimistic nations who believe that history doesn’t shape us, but that we have thepower to shape history. and that spirit of hope and optimism is really at the center of thediwali celebration. as the days grow shorter, the diwali reminds us that spring always returns –that knowledge triumphs over ignorance, hope outlasts despair, and light replaces darkness.diwali is a time for the revitalization of mind and spirit. and just as critically, it affords a chanceto reflect on how we can bring light to others. it is an opportunity for us all, regardless of ourown traditions, to renew a shared commitment to human dignity, compassion, and service– and it is a commitment, i think, at the heart of all great faiths.

so just last week, i hosted a celebration for the diplomatic community commemorating eidal-adha. earlier in the year we marked the nowruz celebration. and tonight, thanks to the goodefforts of shaun casey, who i did bring in here to create the first ever interfaith office withinthe state department, we are now appropriately celebrating diwali too. (applause.) it’simportant to note that these special celebrations are celebrated in communities all acrossamerica and in india and in other countries. and it’s an indication of how our mutualcommitment to religious tolerance and pluralism helps to define and to strengthen our twodemocracies.

president obama and prime minister modi had a chance to celebrate these shared values lastmonth when they crossed the avenue from the white house and together went to visit themartin luther king memorial. and everybody near knows how influenced dr. king was bymahatma gandhi. the two leaders stopped to read a few words from dr. king, words thatcautioned all of us, and still do, against the tendency for violence to fuel future violence. andhe warned us all: “darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. hate cannot driveout hate; only love can do that.” and as dr. king testified so often, life is a constant strugglebetween the better and lesser angels of our nature. tonight, as we come together in the spiritof the diwali festival, we need to, all of us, think about how to reaffirm our sharedcommitment to the light. and this is particularly a moment as we look at the events aroundthe world where that commitment could serve all humankind.

so in closing, i want to thank all of you for joining us at the state department’s first ever diwalicelebration. i guarantee you it will not be our last. (laughter and applause.) and it isimportant in many ways for all of us on occasions like this to be able to come together andcelebrate the diversity of our backgrounds, the diversity of our beliefs, to count our sharedblessings and our responsibilities, and to do so as sisters and brothers, as mothers and fathers,as members of a community, as citizens of a nation, and as stewards of our planet.

so i am pleased now to introduce one of the leading members of the diplomatic corps here inwashington, a distinguished public servant, and he’s a terrific representative of his country.he’s also a passionate advocate for the stronger ties between the united states and india.and i am talking, of course, about ambassador subrahmanyam jaishankar. thank you. (applause.)

Since I go to school, my parents always tell me that I should study hard, so that I can find a good job in the future and earn a lot of money. To most people, the purpose of reading books is to make money. But as I study more, I realize that making money and reading books don’t have the directly connection. The children should know more about the world by reading more books, at the same time, they need to sense the great joy of reading. When they are equipped with knowledge, they can solve problems by the skills they learn, the most important thing for them is to face difficulties with positive attitude.

Recently, ther is a heated debate in our society. The college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive exceptional education at extraordinary places. But will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? Will we be able to better the lives of others? Will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country?

The cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. But the cynics are wrong. The college students I see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. We help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.

The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.

As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. I believe in all my fellow classmates. Though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish. I believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place. I believe in our future.

In the north of China, there lies a 6,700-kilometer-long (4,161-mile-long) ancient wall. Now well-known as the Great Wall of China, it starts at the Jiayuguan Pass of Gansu Province in the west and ends at the Shanhaiguan Pass of Hebei Province in the east. As one of the Eight Wonders in the world, the Great Wall of China has become the symbol of the Chinese nation and its culture.

Lots of beautiful legends and stories about the Great Wall took place following along the construction, and since that time these stories have spread around the country. Those that happened during construction are abundant, such as Meng

Jiangnus story and the legend of the Jiayuguan Pass. Meng Jiangnus story is the most famous and widely spread of all the legends about the Great Wall. The story happened during the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC). It tells of how Meng Jiangnus bitter weeping made a section of the Great Wall collapse. Meng Jiangnus husband Fan Qiliang was caught by federal officials and sent to build the Great Wall. Meng Jiangnu heard nothing from him after his departure, so she set out to look for him. Unfortunately, by the time she reached the great wall, she discovered that her husband had already died. Hearing the bad news, she cried her heart out. Her howl caused the collapse of a part of the Great Wall. This story indicates that the Great Wall is the production of tens of thousands of Chinese commoners.

Another legend about the Jiayuguan Pass tells of a workman named Yi Kaizhan in the Ming Dynasty (1368BC-1644BC) who was proficient in arithmetic. He calculated that it would need 99,999 bricks to build the Jiayuguan Pass. The supervisor did not believe him and said if they miscalculated by even one brick, then all the workmen would be punished to do hard work for three years. After the completion of the project, one brick was left behind the Xiwong city gate. The supervisor was happy at the sight brick and ready to punish them. However Yi Kaizhan said with deliberation that the brick was put there by a supernatural being to fix the wall. A tiny move would cause the collapse of the wall. Therefore the brick was kept there and never moved. It can still be found there today on the tower of the Jiayuguan Pass. In addition to the above-mentioned stories about the construction of the Great Wall, there are also plenty of stories about current scenic spots. A famous one is the legend of the Beacon Tower. This story happened during the Western Zhou Dynasty (11th century BC-711 BC). King You had a queen named Bao Si, who was very pretty. King You liked her very much, however Bao Si never smiled. An official gave a suggestion that setting the beacon tower on fire would frighten the Kings subjects, and might make the queen smile. King You liked the idea. The subjects were fooled and Bao Si smiled at the sight of the chaos. Later enemies invaded Western Zhou, King You set the beacon tower on fire to ask for help. No subjects came to help because they had been fooled once before. Thus, King Zhou was killed by the enemy and Western Zhou came to an end.

Beautiful stories and legends about the Great Wall help to keep alive Chinese history and culture. In each dynasty after the building of the Great Wall, many more stories were created and spread.

Hello, Dear teachers and fellow students. It is my honor to be here on this beautiful Friday morning to share with you my view on “Me- time”.

In my opinion, finding me-time is important. With the development of the modern society, we students in China have more and more pressure. We have to spare every minute to study very hard and join various kinds of out-of-class training courses to improve ourselves. So we are really in lack of me-time which is helpful to keep ourselves from being over-stressed、tired and worried.

I do not have as much fun as before and I always miss my childhood. Three hours of homework and two piano lessons one day make me have hardly any me-time to relax myself. I was once an active basketball player on my school team. But now, basketball, my best friend, I haven’t touched it for almost two months. Me- time seems to have become a luxury.

Last week, when I heard there was going to be a basketball match between our school and No 1 Middle School, I was so excited that I rushed home and told my parents the news. I asked my father, “ Dad, may I play basketball after school ? The coach says I am the best guard in our school. If I join the school basketball team, we are sure to beat No 1 Middle School this time.” My father showed his dispproval and said, “ Of course you can’t . I’m disappointed at you. Why do you have such a silly idea? Don’t forget to work hard on your schoolwork and piano lessons.” In my parents’ points of view, playing basketball is a waste of time.

As far as I’m concerned, the school assignment to the junior school students is too heavy. To grow into healthy and well-rounded adults, we should be allowed to have more me-time for relaxation. The pressure put on our students by excessive schoolwork can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy physically and mentally.

My dear teachers, I hope you can assign less homework so we students can enjoy a period of me-time. My dear parents, would you please not follow me and remind me of study all the time? Please trust me that I will do my best. My dear friends, why not stop for a while from your heavy homework and do anything you like? It’s me-time. I do think, that a reduction of the current heavy load would be beneficial to us students and to the society as a whole. Finding me-time will make our life rich, colorful and rewarding.

  Thank you for your attention!

Dear teachers,dear students:

  hello everyone!

The topic of my speech is "the hardness of life"

The vast desert,a tree stand, the show is a monument to the image.

Towering mountains, thousands of tree stand up,as is a magnificent the Great Wall.

The long river, all the trees stood up into a dragon of glory.

We are a symbol of too much, and too much. But I believe that my image is not "the gentlest hands, skin, such as Diorskin" Lin Daiyu, nor is the modern "unkempt and shabby","Su Qier". We are a symbol of hope and vitality. So we show in front of others should be ed without pleats, face without scale, modest and polite gestures exudes a stream of heroic spirit, the image of the vigor and vitality of the modern new youth,a into the embodiment of the spirit of nature.

Someone once said, life is a kind of hardness, integrity and dignity of life is propped up the hardness of bone. "Better life" and "the Kui back in the day,and not ashamed on the ground",which is always the traditional virtue of the China.

Li Bais "the eyebrow nengcui Zheyaoshan powerful thing,so that I may not be happy Yan" this awe inspiring atmosphere of the verse and whether it will make those no self-esteem people to shame? Loss of self-esteem is a worthless person, and we as the vanguard of the times,if drown in the darkness forever,or to do a dauntless hero,a flower in the wind and rain sonorous rose. The answer is self-evident. Desert desolate also has the monument stands,Castle Peak again proud, but also have the great wall around, the river again quiet, also there is a dragon in the recumbent.

But the time can be changed, our image, our glory remains the same. Because we pride, because we are confident, because we have a fresh life. And because of this,it is a vast desert riparian long,Qingshan was evergreen, the hardness of life is forever.

Because of this we will go to dream, to grasp the dream, the pursuit of dreams.

And because of countrys dream is the one peoples little dream, is not affected by big dream small dreams, but just because one little dream realization and achievement of the establishment of the great dream, why not?

My dream, our dream, to improve the Chinese dream.

To you the day of my dreams to realize, is standing at the time of China.

  keep your direction

what would you do if you failed? many people may choose to give up. however, the surest way to success is to keep your direction and stick to your goal.

on your way to success, you must keep your direction. it is just like a lamp, guiding you in darkness and helping you overcome obstacles on your way. otherwise, you will easily get lost or hesitate to go ahead.

direction means objectives. you can get nowhere without an objective in life.

you can try to write your objective on paper and make some plans to achieve it. in this way, you will know how to arrange your time and to spend your time properly. and you should also have a belief that you are sure to succeed as long as you keep your direction all the time.

Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. This often existsin a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul .Worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .

Whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ‘s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living . In the center of your heart and my heart there’s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .

When the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.

  Thank you!

Today, I had a rich and meaningful day. My mother opened a bakery. She wasvery kind-hearted. She promised the children in the orphanage to bake for themtoday. My mother asked me to help. When we baked all the bread, we brought allof them to the orphanage. This was the first time I went to orphanage. I thoughtI couldn’t forget the smile on the children’s face when they saw us. They wereas happy as birds. They accepted the bread just as a gift from the ared with them, I felt that I was so happy. Thanks to my parents that I canhave such happy life. I loved them. I will treasure more my life in thefuture.

It was sunny and warm today. I got up early. After breakfast I went to ..Mountain with my friend Li Lei. It took us about an hour to get there by bus. There were thousands of people. We joined them to climb the mountain as soon as we got there. We felt tired but we kept climbing.

It took us about an hour to get to the top of the mountain. The wind was so cool and the scenry was very beautiful. We had a picnic and then we walked down from the mountain. We were very happy that day.

In the evening, I surfed the internet and then read an interesting book. I really had a meaningful and happy day.

In ancient Greece, these were called Sophists – and they would have loved Twitter and Facebook.

Social media has given rise to a new golden age of sophistry – aided and abetted by blind partisanship. The only way to overcome it – the only way to lift our national discourse out of the gutter – is to heed Washington’s words and take pains to bring truth to light.

Those pains are the burden of citizenship in a democracy. And a great education does not relieve them. It intensifies them. This is especially true, I believe, for graduates of a university bearing the name Washington.

We all know that the 5th day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunarcalendar is the Dragon Boat Festival! In my home, grandma will always be busymaking zongzi.

In a few days, grandma will go to the supermarket to buyglutinous rice and rice dumplings, then put the dumplings in the pot to boil, and then brush them out with the brush, and wait until the Dragon Boat Festivalday to bring the dumplings.

On the day of Dragon Boat Festival, my mother andI were still asleep. Grandma was calling zongzi. Grandma had prepared severalkinds of stuffing, including jujube, peas and pork. I like jujube most, but mymother likes nothing to eat. "Do it!" Grandma said. My mother and I smiled, because my mother is the first time I have zongzi, certainly not the I still want to learn from my grandmother and try it before I know it.

Mymother and I pick up their leaves, according to grandma taught step by use it was the first time to make zongzi, and the mother smiled and said,"how do we do it? It looks like a simple one. It's stupid to do it." I listened, looked at the shapeless dumpling in my mother's hands, and laughed loudly, justlike mine. No corner of the corner, Mrs. Grandma encouraged us: "the first isnot good, the second will surely improve." In this way, mother is better than abag, but I still haven't learned it.

I will not cook zongzi to cook zongzi, Iwill put the dumplings wrapped by grandma in the pot, add water, and then burnit up. After a while, a zongzi fragrance floated out, I'm waiting for myfavorite dumplings dates. I had an unforgettable Dragon Boat Festival. I wish Icould be happy every year.
